It’s All About Family – Especially Mom!

Take a moment to think about the moms in your life—your own mother, grandmother, aunts, sisters, wives—and how they have  affected your life. How they touch the lives of everyone around them. Mothers bring us into the world, raise us, and support us.

On Sunday, May 14, you have an opportunity to show your appreciation and gratitude for everything that mothers do. Mother’s Day is dedicated to showing all mothers that they are irreplaceable; our lives just wouldn’t be the same without them.

This is definitely true in the case of my own mother. Without her, Duke’s Chowder House wouldn’t even exist.

Ruth Moscrip: “Make Something of Yourself”

My mother Ruth was a strong, beautiful woman who expected a lot from ‘her boys,’ meaning my brother Bill and I. At our house, chores were done on time and done right, no questions asked. The term ‘slacking’ was not in our vocabulary. She was definitely a taskmaster, but my mother was never short on affection. She loved us fiercely, and we loved her right back.

My dad, the original Duke, was a sports coach. Naturally, this meant that my brother and I were very much into sports throughout our childhood. My mother never tried to turn us away from our love of sports. In fact, she never missed one of our games, ever. I think she recognized that organized sport teaches youngsters incredibly valuable life skills, such as leadership, commitment, confidence, and discipline. However, she was adamant that sports would not be the end-all and be-all for Bill and I.

It’s easy at that age to think that you will obviously grow up to be the next Hank Aaron or Mickey Mantle, but my mother kept the big picture (and reality) directly in front of us.

“I don’t want you growing up to be a jockstrap,” she would say. “I want you to amount to something; you’re not going to spend your life in a gymnasium!”

I’ve always thought that inspiration can come from anywhere – it’s floating around out there in the world, and it’s up to you to discover it. Each day can be your day to get inspired. But inspiration is only one side of the coin. Motivation is the internal engine that drives one to seek out inspiration, to find his or her muse.

My mother and her ambitions started my motivational engine for me. I attribute much of my success in life to the lofty goals she set for me, and to her constant and ferocious belief that I could succeed at anything. To this day, I can hear her voice, commanding me to “make something of yourself,” and continuously pushing me to follow my dreams.

A Mothers’s Touch at Duke’s Chowder House

Mother's Day

Delicious, home-inspired recipes make up our menu, and a few things borrowed from my own mother’s kitchen!

The inspiration and motivation I got from my mother is embedded within my restaurant business. Just as when I was growing up, my mother’s influence has seeped its way into almost all aspects of Duke’s Chowder House.

For instance, dessert. One of our most popular sweet treats is called What’s-Her-Name’s Carrot Cake. The recipe came from a friend of one of our employees. For the life of me, I could never remember the name of her friend, hence the title of the cake! It’s a delicious cake, dense and moist with a wonderful carrot flavor.

Now, everyone knows that no carrot cake is complete without a rich, creamy and thick cream cheese frosting. You may not know this, but Ruth Moscrip made the absolute BEST cream cheese frosting. So, we borrowed her recipe and technique, added a little orange zest for excitement, and voila! What’s-Her-Name’s Carrot Cake tastes like heaven, partly in thanks to my mother’s culinary skills.

My mother is also the reason for my strong commitment to supporting sustainable food options. I’ve inherited her sense of foresight and ambition for the future of my children and grandchildren. A big part of that is making sure that they have access to nutritious, organic food for their entire lives. I will do everything I can to protect Wild Salmon, Halibut and other seafood for future generations. My mother ingrained in me a deep sense of responsibility to my beliefs; practice what you preach!

This is why we use only wild, sustainably harvested Alaskan Salmon in our kitchens, and why we make it a priority to contribute to the fight to save local Wild Salmon. It’s why we also source other ingredients like beef, eggs, and vegetables from sustainable operations. Sustainability is the driving philosophy behind the success of Duke’s Chowder House, a philosophy I learned at my mother’s knee. I have her to thank for every single one of my accomplishments thus far; I know she would be proud of me.
